One theory by Freud, in his book, "Interpretation of Dreams" came up with the theory that dreams involved the discharge of repressed wishes. Essentially, desires and content that normally be cause people to awaken, would be repressed and come out during dreams. He also believed he could decode the meaning of it by diagnosing a psychic problem with the dream content. However, this theory could not be proven true or false, and did not produce consistent results.
